1953 (words & music by Richard Neal copyright 2006) The January air was crisp There was a winter chill There was a grave freshly dug On the side of Sunset Hill That's where my mother was to rest From today 'til eternity And today was also the day She gave birth to me Back in 1953 In ordinary circumstance It was a day to celebrate Instead we rode in the procession As it wended toward her grave And when the family Minister Gave the eulogy I thought of the proud young mother Who gave birth to me On this day in '53 How the workmen sliced the earth Thrusting in their spades As long as I am breathing I can't forget the sound that made And how they worked so quickly To fill the cavity Each shovel full filled in the years Since she gave birth to me In 1953 12 more months come and gone Another candle on the cake Another birthday visit To the hillside with a grave Sometimes I lay a bouquet Or I leave a wreath A gift to give her on the day She gave birth to me Back in 1953
